Expecting a lot from a movie typically means you won't like it much -- and no matter how we remind ourselves of this, it's hard to flip that switch inside your head. Well, I thought from the first trailer on TV that Runaway Jury looked great... but since I figured no one else would want to see it, I kind of forgot about it. Better anyway, since movies based on good books usually are the biggest letdowns, right? Maybe it's because I never read Grisham's original version, but I don't know how much more captivating an on-screen translation we could hope for. I finally watched the DVD with my parents, and it's great. If you have even a passing interest in law, you ought to love this movie. If you have nothing that remotely resembles an interest in court movies, you probably will like it anyway. Per usual, John Cusack is very cool, and the rest of the cast (ever hear of Gene Hackman or Dustin Hoffman?) works equally well. You never know who to trust, and it's extremely entertaining, and I made a somewhat-impulse purchase of Runaway Jury after seeing it once. Four points out of five for great performances in a carefully drawn story; real close to that 4 1/2 mark but the best part is the ending, which loses some of its magic after one viewing.
